By now, science knows much about this surprising complex of interconnected
nervous cells which constitutes the nervous system, nevertheless it is still satisfying to ask the question of how the unanimated materia formed by atoms, molecules and ions originates the state of consciousness.
The neuroscientists, who could protest and confirm with reason the complex knowledge they have about the brain, haven’t given an answer to this question most people have, yet: the question of what are thoughts, ideas, sensations, to formulate it by means of a single question, what is this, the mind?

Still much time is needed to understand all this.
However, to accept the fact that ideas and thoughts depend on a group of nervous cells, which performs a continuous, repeatable, controllable and specific nervous activity, does not seem to be an absurdity and it is that what we would like to teach you in an easy way.
According to general conviction , mental sensations, thoughts and ideas are simply part of what happens inside the brain when its network of neurons endures a series of specific activations. Furthermore, when you “recall” something one presumes that the brain is being activated in a similar way as if it was activated at the moment of the initial experience which makes emerge the recall.

The main part of all theories is based on the belief that memory is linked to particular molecular mechanisms which, yes, do perform a certain neuronal activity, and once verified this activity can once again be verified if necessary when it is activated in the same or similar way.
Hence, it is a lot more probable that inside the brain happens something that has already happened before, as that happens something which has never happened before: thus, the idea that man can encourage the repetition of this neuronal activity at any time he wants to, can easily be accepted.

Through recent researches a gen has been found which is half-asleep but present in every human cell. The activity of this gen can block the natural dying process of the same cells, showing us new horizons of comprehension regarding the way how the “memory” of the immunitary system works and how it is possible to maintain alive certain cells of it, those that create some kind of “long-term memory” to recognize the viruses and combat them.

We wanted to give these examples, but of course we know, that the question is not that simple.

However, very often you may identify the easiest bases exactly there where life's complexity has its seat. By the time it has been verified that every single nervous cell behaves like a tiny elaborator which establishes the number of data, activators and inhibitors which it is fed with, from time to time. It's also clear that the activation or non-activation depend on the input of data and the variations the latter have suffered.

Hence, it is certain by now that the nervous system constitutes a surprising complex of interconnected cells which are subject to impulses that interchange among themselves, involving all cells of the body.

A nervous impulse is a physical, electro-chemical wave which moves alongside a nervous cell. That activity is produced and controlled by proteins and their specific interaction with other chemical substances; proteins are of course codified by genetic information.

The selective entrance and exit of chemical substances, i.e. coming in and going of the cells, is the basis of the electrical activity of the nervous system, and the nervous system is supposed to be responsible for thoughts and the conscious state.
