Studies and Researches on Man

SPIRITISM: Studies and Researches on Man
Psycho-Physical Equilibrium and Will

Dr. Vasconcelos Perez

4th part

Translated by

A man who, since childhood, has been living in a tranquil and serene family milieu, naturally has less difficulties in facing the problems that may appear. However, it’s also true that the serenity of people mainly depends on the way of realizing their own correct behavior in life.

Man hasn’t achieved yet the precise knowledge about the consequences his body and mind endure due to any event or minimal contrariety; furthermore man is not conscious of his possibilities to activate mechanisms and processes which nature has prearranged “ad hoc” in order to avoid long-lasting, unpleasant and wearing consequences for body and mind.

First of all man reacts emotionally to events and it is well-known that emotional states are tightly connected to the nervous system, above all, to the vegetative nervous system: in human medicine there is a field called psycho neurophysiology where exactly the relation of emotions and nervous system is studied.
But, what are emotions? What do they unleash in man and according to what kind of psychodynamic processes does this happen?
What does this mean and what implies the fact that humanity is generally moved by emotions, and reacts to events first of all emotionally?

It means that man is quarry of his state of mind: anxiety, fear, passion, ambition; confuse desires maintain the natural vibrations of man’s emotions in continuous movement.
These uncontrolled vibrations or energies which emerge from the mental energetic activity, unleashed and sustained by emotivity, are transferred to the physical body by means of the nervous system. The solar plexus is the center of expressions and emotions from where the above mentioned forces derive and where they are produced – the irrational and instinctive brain - which often succeeds in prevailing by a “disorganized” organization of energies.

It often happens that whatever is not perceived and registered as thought on a rational level will be captured and stored by the solar plexus. Sometimes however, at least we think so, rational analyses are made and refused but this produces static energy in the solar plexus. This causes heavy blocks which – when unconsciously retained – cannot be removed by will force because since some time they have been received and formed.

Man’s mind fell prey to instinctive emotions, to innumerous impulses on positive emotions not yet analyzed, he pays attention, shows interest and often nourishes ambivalent emotions, hence creating a disadvantage to respect, love, availability for truth and righteousness, to the values of happiness and harmony in life: as everything emerges from the mind i.e. the way emotions induce man how to see things, he can change his own life by changing the emotions that inspire his ideas and getting habituated to let emotions flow positively thus achieving an enormous complex of positive energy.

Everything that has traced and traces profoundly life and the history of humanity: the Crusades, revolutions, fanaticism or extreme sacrifices, constructions and destructions, peace and wars, all those phenomena and occurrences have taken and take their power from ideas inspired by strong emotions.

The same occurs inside every single, average person: from the mind emerge innumerous impulses. It’s up to man himself to analyze his own affective energy on emotions that emerge from rationality, i.e. from a harmonic relation to nature and its laws.

In that way, the spiritual, very generous and stimulate personality, possesses the potentiality to guide man on a path of life which is in accordance with his nature and aware of the fundamental values of humanity; he won’t be subject to life conditions in which materiality prevails, and where body and mind compress and harm themselves vice versa; he can emerge and send his messages to an open and available mind.

How can we discover the providential mechanisms nature has foreseen and realized for us, all the capacities which are basically necessary to gain a physical and psychical equilibrium?

Spiritism suggests - to deepen our knowledge of man himself and his behaviors, to correct and modify a life-style which since childhood has been drummed into him and passively accepted, by letting emerge attributes which reason and unconscious, instinctive calculation often suffocated by favorizing instead the nutrition of agitation as far as the mental processes are concerned.

Here we are back again at the basic argument regarding mental calmness and the capacity of directing and controlling the production of thoughts.

Nature is versatile, fertile of new adaptations and new capacities which surely are generous to man, but it’s up to man himself to respect the requirements and objectives.
In the family, the simplest and most natural social core of humanity, the bases of environmental equilibrium regarding all possible aspects and, above all, the structures of the interior world and the energies that determine life, can be established.

A balanced and tranquil family whose components are approachable for the other and open to dialogues, is the essence of society, the irremovable premise to form the personality of free individuals, who nonetheless are able to show a correct behavior, adapted to the necessities of the most ample context of society in which each one is integrated.

Utopia, you say! Maybe, but if you look back to the course of the centuries you will only realize a continuous and constant recurring of this utopian tendency.
The improvement of human behavior is the only access-key to respecting and applying correctly the laws nature has predetermined.

This improvement has its beginnings in the family, in the necessity and the conscious habit of expressing thoughts, talking, letting emerge ideas and feelings; these are expressions of a spiritual personality which has affinities with those of all the others, but isn’t fully identical to the personality of anybody.

This habit, if it has been implanted since childhood, helps man to make a tool out of his mind, a mind of which he can disidentify himself to use it as he wants, to control it, and to detach himself from it.

If man learns to direct his mental activities by following a rock-steady course, “ thinking” assumes the meaning of reflecting and exploring profoundly an argument, to verify all possible implications and the worthiness of this argument, and it also means to allow the emerging of that potentiality and those attributes of the same spirit itself , which we strain so much to suppress and hide, as life goes on.

Spontaneity and exchange of ideas and opinions are man’s nature; however, educational conditioning and instinctive defense behaviors often drive him into narrow-mindedness and isolation, to a superficial, standardized and pre-established way of communication.

By means of this new series of articles regarding the results of many studies we would like to contemplate, yet without digressing the subject of spiritistic science, the possible connection between the material world and the spirit’s world, considering all possible aspects: of the human being itself and the exterior of the human being.

We have already mentioned several times the subject of studying spiritism, which we are now going to reaffirm: it is the human being, man in his entirety, his whole material body together with his spiritual personality, who is able to carry on an activity whether under less favorable psychical conditions due to the strong connections to the physical body, or, under casual, voluntary (and temporary) spiritual conditions, partially freed from those connections, i.e. having finally liberated the spirit, by being totally released of materia and conscious of his condition.
Spiritism studies and considers even intermediate situations, among these there are three conditions more defined and spiritism evaluates the problematicalness of these conditions and suggests us remedies.

Actually, regarding men, there are considerable differences of mental behaviors and expressions which determine the capacity and possibility of letting emerge those attributes of the same spirit, attributes that help us so much on our way through life and even further.
We intend to talk about the willpower, the capacity to combat egoism, and to be open and helpful towards the same akin fellow creatures, and we want to talk about the innate possibility to carry on a psycho-equilibrated activity tuned in, but not depending on, the physical.
Initially the spiritistic science stimulates us to observe our own ways of behavior and those of other people in context of the social milieu in which man is fitted. Milieus man himself, during the course of the centuries, determined and influenced according to his own mental opening and his capacity to look forward.
The social and economic progress brought to man material and cultural improvements of which he certainly cannot and must not regress.
However, the environment or milieu in which man lives is susceptible to further new improvements regarding a flow of needs to which man himself cannot renounce, but must try to adapt these needs to the natural laws in accordance with human life.
The control of this suitable environment on a human scale, as they nowadays say, is progress, is man’s own partial conquest of an established but not pre-established equilibrium.
